The Music Teachers National Association sponsors student competitions in both composition and performance. These competitions are intended to encourage students and to recognize the work of their teachers. The MTNA Student Composition Competition is open to students from elementary through college levels. The MTNA Junior (ages 11-14), Senior (ages 15-18), Young Artist (age 19-29 on January 1, 2026), and Chamber Music (each member must be age 18-29 on January 1, 2026) Performance Competitions include all instruments and voice.

Competitions begin at the state level. SCMTA sponsors all levels and categories of the MTNA Competitions. Auditions are held in conjunction with the State Conference during the month of November. State winners advance to the MTNA Southern Division Competitions in January. The Division winners compete in the National Finals held at the MTNA National Conference in March.
